Obituary

JY Liu, President and CEO

Dr. Jian-Yu Liu, a pioneer in the optical communications industry and CEO of COGO Optronics, passed away suddenly. 
It is with profound sadness that we bid farewell to our Founder and CEO Dr. Jian-Yu (“JY”) Liu who passed away on August 29th 2010. He was 48.

JY was a pioneer in the optical communications field and renowned as an expert and mentor. He held more than 40 patents and was an early leader in Liquid Crystal (LC) technology deployment for telecom applications. His designs were the first to be used in LC-based products in live DWDM networks and products derived from his passive athermal interleaver design for very dense WDM are still being manufactured and widely used today.

During the late 90’s he co-founded Chorum Technolgies, a successful LC technology based start-up company. He later became President and CEO of EZconn where he executed the take-over of Infineon’s PON unit. During this time he initiated the development of the Yahoo BB PON network which dramatically increased EZconn’s revenue.

In 2008, in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz-Institute he co-founded COGO Optronics, a unique and thriving transatlantic company, developing and producing components for high-speed optical networks.

JY was renowned for the support he provided to his colleagues and was always a reliable source of help and understanding to the friends he had made over the years. As a pioneer in both the business and science worlds, he consistently gained recognition and respect from his colleagues and employees. His effort and commitment to any undertaking, business or otherwise, were always rewarded with success.

JY is survived by his wife, his 9-year-old son and a large extended family.
We – COGO Optronics – owe JY a great debt of gratitude and will always hold him in the highest regard. We feel very fortunate to have known and worked with him and we will miss him deeply. Our sympathy goes out to his family and everyone close to him.
